How to Get Unstuck: My Cure for Writer’s Block

As creatives, we have all been there. Maybe you have been staring at the same line for hours. Or maybe you can’t even get the process started. But here are my personal remedies to get you unstuck from your writer’s block.

Do something else creative

My creative mind is always running, whether I am at work, watching tv, or out in my garden. So if I dip my feet in to some other creative activity, it can sometimes get my music gears turning. I personally like junk journaling, where there are already stickers and scraps of paper that are already decorated, all I have to do is organize the difference pieces of “junk” on to a page. I also consider cooking a creative endeavor. I am not fantastic at presentation but the step by step process, seasoning, and then getting the food to the right texture is it’s own art. Not to mention the satisfying feeling of completion and boost in confidence when you finish something, even with something simple.

Physical activity

I am not a gym rat all. I honestly hate working out. But I know the benefits of physical activity and I know that it can get some people out of a rut. My preferred method of physical activity is going on runs. It takes very little planning and very little brain power, just get up, get out, and start moving your legs. Running is a great way to discharge my overthinking mind and clear all of the thoughts out. And then once I have aired all of my woes to the wind, I start to daydream. On my runs I daydream about exciting hypothetical events or I imagine visuals for the music that I am listening to. I imagine myself partying and having fun, just feeding my mind positive images while I exercise my body.

Listen to my inspiration playlist

I keep a playlist of songs where I like the sounds, the story, or the vibe. Some of the songs I want to replicate in some way and some songs love to listen to just to admire how great it is. When I find myself stuck in a block, sometimes I just have to grab my Sennheisers and melt away in this playlist.

Read

I basically stay within sci-fi fantasy or romantasy books. So naturally, I am constantly consuming fantastical images from these books in the form of words. And you have to have a hell of an imagination to get through an entire series of whacky names and made up worlds. But the huge benefit of reading these incredibly creative books is that they spark my own creativity. The stories that authors weave are incredible to me, and I have even thought up entire songs inspired by some of my favorite series.

SLEEP

The bigger theme here is to make sure you’re taking care of your body. Drink your water, eat your greens, and get your sleep. And I LOVE sleep. I am not the type to condone staying up until the demon hours to get a song or project done. And I will never understand why the culture in the music industry is to start studio sessions at 10:00 at night or later. I will prioritize getting in bed early over going out at night frequently. I have slept through several New Year’s Eve countdowns so that I could sleep. But once I wake up, once I get to the other side of taking care of my body, I have much more clarity and I am able to focus on larger tasks.

I get myself unstuck frequently, because you can find my music circulating everywhere you stream. Give my music a listen or learn more about me. Happy creating!
